Member Spotlight: Jennifer Cowles

Jennifer Cowles is vice president and chief lending officer for American Eagle Federal Credit Union in East Hartford, Connecticut. One of her initial responsibilities with the credit union when she joined in 1991 was establishing a real estate lending department. In January 2003 she became the chief lending officer. Her responsibilities include real estate and consumer loans, Visa credit card programs, loan servicing, and collections. Jennifer lives in East Longmeadow, Massachusetts, with her husband and three children.

Biggest challenge

Staying on top of all of the changes in real estate lending.

Don't be afraid to admit what you don't know. Seek answers.

Being able to network with others who are facing the same challenges. Sharing knowledge is part of what makes credit unions special.

Developing staff so that they can reach their potential.

Tiger Woods would my choice because I would like to know how he is able to have such a singular focus and be able to block out the unimportant stuff.

How I would explain the credit union difference

It is about offering reasonable product choices at fair prices and being a trusted advisor to the member, especially during difficult times.
