CUNA Lending Council More Than Doubles Available Scholarships for 2009

The CUNA Lending Council more than doubled its commitment to the education of lending professionals by recently raising its scholarship budget from $55,000 to $125,000 for the year.

The increase means a minimum of 50 executives will be able to benefit from lending-related education programs this year. “We recognize it has been a tougher year for a lot of credit unions, so we wanted to step up to the plate and help out more professionals than ever this year,“ said Lloyd Gill, council chair and executive vice president and chief lending officer at City County CU in Margate, Fla.

Scholarships are awarded for up to $2,500 and can be used toward expenses for CUNA Lending Council conference registration, CUNA school tuition, CUNA Lending Council annual dues, or additional coursework not offered through the CUNA program. Only coursework in lending-related subjects are considered applicable for the scholarship program.

Additionally, the council recently extended the scholarship deadline for the CUNA Business Lending Certification Institutes to Monday, June 22. The new deadline applies to all four levels of the institute taking place simultaneously July 20-24, in Madison, including: Fundamentals, Credit Analysis, Advanced Credit Analysis, and Management Strategies.

The council’s scholarship committee reviews all applications and selects recipients based on the credit union’s skill and financial needs.

The lending council first began successfully providing a limited number of scholarships in 1998. Since then, they have approved more than 200 requests for scholarships totaling more than $375,000. In 2004, the council established a scholarship fund at the National Credit Union Foundation to support those efforts.
